Is it Spring yet?


I think this is the coldest March that I have experienced since moving to North Carolina. This weekend we needed to get the kiln loaded for a bisque firing. Saturday was spent outside in the kiln shed shivering, while sanding and loading pots. It wasn't a very pleasant day, but we had the kiln loaded by 5:00 pm and Jeff bricked the door before dark.


We have quite an assortment of pots in the kiln. I had an order for a sheep so I made a few. The smaller, roundy ones are rattles. Lots of ginkgo carved pots, and the usual piggy banks and vessel sinks.



Hey... what happened to my tail? Oops. How did I forget that? I will have to get creative with him. Maybe I will paint a tail on with under-glaze! Luckily he is not an order, but an extra.


Despite the chilly weather there are signs of Spring in the yard. Friday was a sunny day and while hanging out laundry (yes I do that, and actually enjoy it!) I noticed the iris were blooming near the clothesline. I love irises and we only have white ones here at 505. I have to remember to plant a new variety this year. I am not even sure what time of year they are planted I guess I will have to "google" it.

Hello December!

Here we are in the first week of December and yesterday we woke up to this... There was about 2" of snow and then freezing rain all day. We heard tree branched cracking all day. Some of our shrubs and bushes are leaning over. I hope my camellias aren't damaged. The fan on our heat pump was encased in ice started making a thumping sound. Jeff shut it off, de-iced the fan and covered the unit. We are fortunate to also have electric baseboard heat as a back up. We knew the heat pump would ice up again quickly. It's a new unit and we didn't want to take any chances in damaging the motor. There was a lull in the storm overnight but more freezing rain was predicted for the early morning. We woke up to snow instead. I will take snow over freezing rain any day... but I truly prefer the sunshine. It's holiday crunch time for us. While I would have loved to spend a snow day snuggled up on the sofa with a book, it just wasn't in the cards. Jeff and I spent the day glazing...

Global Clay Day at the NC Pottery Center

Jeff will be participating in "Global Clay Day" at the North Carolina Pottery Center this Saturday, October, 20, 2018.  He will demonstrate throwing pots in his Korean style kick wheel as well the mishima inlay techniques. Jeff loves to give demos. It brings out the performer in him! There will be four other potters also giving demonstrations, ranging from raku firing, sculpture, and carving techniques. The event is from 10 am to 4 pm, and there is no admission fee. The pottery center is located just around the corner from our home and studio... Exhibition at Sand Hills Community College

There was a bright spot in our life last week! Jeff and I were invited to participate in an exhibition at Sandhills Community College in Southern Pines, NC. Sandhills is Jeff's alma mater and it was exciting for him to go back and see how the college has grown and changed since the late 70's. Our work is being show along with large scale paintings by Bucky Benson. The show is in the Hastings Gallery, located in the Boyd Library building. It's a really nice space, and Jeff was able to set up the pedestals and pottery. This show is the first collaborative effort between the college and the Arts Council of Moore County.
