Little Boxes

I have been working on a series of little boxes thrown in one piece. The first ones I made are cooling in the kiln. These I finished up on Friday.


I decided to combine some slip trailing with the carving.


And one with just slip trailing. I haven't done much slip trailing in recent years, other then the occasional dots. I soon realized I am way out of practice! I sort of felt like I had old lady shaky hands.



While these were fun to make, I do think that throwing a jar and a lid separately is actually less time consuming. I will go back to that method on the next go around.

Hello December!

Here we are in the first week of December and yesterday we woke up to this... There was about 2" of snow and then freezing rain all day. We heard tree branched cracking all day. Some of our shrubs and bushes are leaning over. I hope my camellias aren't damaged. The fan on our heat pump was encased in ice started making a thumping sound. Jeff shut it off, de-iced the fan and covered the unit. We are fortunate to also have electric baseboard heat as a back up. We knew the heat pump would ice up again quickly. It's a new unit and we didn't want to take any chances in damaging the motor. There was a lull in the storm overnight but more freezing rain was predicted for the early morning. We woke up to snow instead. I will take snow over freezing rain any day... but I truly prefer the sunshine. It's holiday crunch time for us. While I would have loved to spend a snow day snuggled up on the sofa with a book, it just wasn't in the cards. Jeff and I spent the day glazing...

Global Clay Day at the NC Pottery Center

Jeff will be participating in "Global Clay Day" at the North Carolina Pottery Center this Saturday, October, 20, 2018.  He will demonstrate throwing pots in his Korean style kick wheel as well the mishima inlay techniques. Jeff loves to give demos. It brings out the performer in him! There will be four other potters also giving demonstrations, ranging from raku firing, sculpture, and carving techniques. The event is from 10 am to 4 pm, and there is no admission fee. The pottery center is located just around the corner from our home and studio... Wired and Ready

Our old electric kiln is ready to go! Yesterday we fired the last bisque in the gas kiln. We actually have two electric kilns, the one to the right needs a little work. Jeff will do the repairs at some point and we can fire back to back if need be. While the electrician was here we had some more outlets put in the basement. We were using a couple of extension cords down there, one was to run the dehumidifier, and that made us nervous. Little by little this old house will be brought up to the 21st century! These little salt and pepper pigs came out of the last firing. They are rather tedious to put together. Smaller isn't always easier. Last week I was assembling a few more and I ended up with an odd number of bodies, so I decided to have some fun with the oddball... I turned him into a bull! He has larger holes on his back and he will make a great red pepper flake or Parmesan cheese shaker. Isn't he the cutest thing?
